House sparrows have suffered a severe decline in the UK with estimates suggesting numbers dropped by 71% between 1977 and 2008. Whilst the decline continues in England, data indicates that populations have increased in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
House sparrows usually nest in colonies so the nests can be close together. Pairs often remain faithful to each other for life, although if a partner is lost they are usually replaced within days. Their main nesting season is between April and August, with most birds laying two or three clutches. Between two and five eggs are laid at daily intervals, and chicks hatch after 11-14 days.
This Eco Sparrow Tower is a new design and provides three separate nesting chambers each with a 32mm entrance hole. It has a fixed roof to enable the box to be fitted high up in the eaves, where sparrows prefer.
The tower is made from recycled plastic and certified timber. Oriented Strand Board, made from flakes of wood waste and saplings which have been removed to make space for larger trees, is used to make the nest box. The outer, weatherproof shell is made from UV stabilised 100% recycled plastic. This outer shell has been precision cut and uses a system of tabs to hold it together, extending the lifespan by avoiding the use of fixings that could rust or degrade.
Simple to install, with three concealed mounting holes in the back of the plastic outer shell near the top, with a further hole near the base. Then slide the wooden chamber inside the plastic shell and secure it in place by twisting the fastening at the bottom.
When you need to check or clean the box, just twist the fastening at the bottom and slide the nesting chamber out.
